An interesting mix of game and cartoon music......, February 7, 2006
Viewtiful Joe is a popular Capcom series that started out on the Nintendo Gamecube a few years back. Since then, the series has seen three more releases and at least two currently in development. And now, after milking an established franchise for all it's worth, Capcom has decided to release a Viewitful Joe soundtrack containing cuts from both the game and television series. With mixed results, it actually turned out very well.
The CD starts off with a very cheesy Japanese pop song called "Brighter Side", a song that I wouldn't dare show to my friends, even though I secretly heart the song. "Spirit Awake" is another highlight, along with "And You", all three being very similar high energy pop tracks. But the album breaks off not long after, into music straight from the game, which is fairly good high energy stuff, but it's really just filler between the other stuff. "Shangri-La" surprised me with it's quality piano driven quality, it has a feel good sound to it. Honestly, the album should have been straight J-Pop, I would have been giving it five stars I'm sure. I've never been all that familiar with Japanese music, but I really love what I've heard from various videogame soundtracks. If there's anymore of this, sign me up!
Ultimately, while it does contain some fairly boring material, Viewtiful Joe Vol. 1 has just enough qualities to warrant it a strong 4/5 stars.
