Resistance 3 Will Support 3D, PlayStation Move Sharp Shooter Thanks to Community Demand

Resistance 3PlayStation Move: Sharp Shooter

Greetings from the fabulous Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, where we're in the middle of Insomniac's 3rd Annual Community Day. We've been letting fans get some of their first hands-on gameplay with Resistance 3 and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One. We've also been showing cool demos and producing Q&As to bring you in the form of Full Moon Show podcasts in the coming weeks.

That said, today we are finally able reveal, due to overwhelming community demand, that Resistance 3 will support Stereoscopic 3DTV. Furthermore, those of you who are enjoying the precision of the PlayStation Move motion controller with your copies of Killzone 3 and the SOCOM 4 Beta will be delighted to know that Resistance 3 will also support PlayStation Move and the sharp shooter. After Killzone 3 launched, we heard a massive amount of positive feedback, and were inundated with requests to support both PlayStation Move and sharp shooter. So we're glad to be able to finally confirm the news!

Resistance 3: Stereoscopic 3D and PlayStation Move sharp shooter

As you can see, our founder Ted Price and Resistance 3 Creative Director Marcus Smith are so pumped that they found 3D glasses and grabbed sharp shooters to pose for a photo (though we had to remind them that they need the cool high-tech stereoscopic 3D glasses to actually play, not those old "red-blue" ones).

Resistance 3 hits your PS3 and 3D TV on September 6th, so have your sharp shooter ready! In the meantime, if you want to hear about all the latest happenings at our community day, follow us on Twitter (search for hashtag #InsomniacGames for some live contests!) to see or like us on Facebook. We'll be posting audio and video from today's community event in the weeks to come, so keep checking in for all the latest.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution: When Worlds Collide

"It was important for us to see Deus Ex: Human Revolution as a new IP. We wanted to re-imagine this world."

Director Jean-Francois Dugas and Producer David Anfossi are unabashed fans of Deus Ex, the cyberpunk RPG-shooter hybrid that graced the PS2 in 2002 and won more than its fair share of Game of the Year awards. But when the pair signed on with Eidos Montreal to produce a new entry in the critically acclaimed series, they opted to introduce a new story set five years before the first game. "When you look at the endings of the other Deus Ex games, the future is looking pretty grim," Director Dugas notes with a chuckle.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution depicts a world rocked by unbridled technological advancement, a world secretly ruled by shadowy cabals and monolithic corporations with questionable motives. You play as Adam Jensen, a security expert who becomes an unwilling recipient of bleeding-edge cybernetic augmentations following a ruthless attack in the opening minutes of the game. Jensen is the definition of a reluctant hero, but he plunges into the seedy underbelly of 2027 in order to track down his abducted ex-girlfriend — a scientist who has discovered a revolutionary new process for augmenting human tissue.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution for PS3Deus Ex: Human Revolution for PS3

Development on Deus Ex: Human Revolution began with Dugas and Anfossi carefully analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the franchise. The atmosphere, story, characters, and RPG elements were mesmerizing; the action was merely tolerable. "The shooting was flawed because it was heavily stat-based," Dugas observes. "Your aim could be super precise, but the game artificially told you that you weren't precise enough, which made for a clumsy combat experience." For Human Revolution, Dugas and Anfossi streamlined the shooting and incorporated a visceral new tactical punch: You need to use cover effectively, prioritize enemies based on their location, and consider your weapon choices carefully. The result is a sleek, muscular stealth-action game that combines the original game's sympathetic characters and intellectual themes with the kind of fearsome combat sequences you might expect from a Metal Gear Solid 4 or a Rainbow Six: Vegas.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution for PS3

Except that that protagonist Adam Jensen is capable of superhuman feats far beyond those of mere mortals. He can effortlessly eviscerate foes with retractable blades that sprout from his arms, carry and hurl massive objects with bone-crushing force, or release a 360-degree fan of cluster bombs to frag any fool who dares get close. With his security background, Jensen's also a crack shot with firearms, all of which can be upgraded with enhanced ammunition, mods and more. The weapons run the gamut from low-tech to high-tech, lethal to non-lethal. We're talking stealthy tranquilizer rifles, punchy 10mm handguns, devastating double-barreled shotguns, grenade launchers, the works.

But depending on your interpretation of Jensen, all that fancy firepower may be overkill. Sometimes all it takes is a little stealth, a silver tongue, and the right social augmentations. "You can play the entire game without killing anyone, save for the boss fights," Dugas confirms. "It makes for a more challenging experience, but it's very rewarding." Anfossi agrees: "We want players to create a personalized version of Jensen and decide his approach. Some players will think, 'This guy wouldn't kill these people.'" Whatever your approach — lethal or nonlethal, aggression or stealth — the game meticulously tracks the player's tactics and dishes out the consequences accordingly. And you can be certain of one thing: there will be consequences.

"I'm most excited for players to simply absorb this world. It's like reading a great graphic novel, a page-turner," Dugas concludes. "It's going to be the first game for Eidos Montreal," Anfossi adds. "We want it to be perfect." Concerned that you need to play the original games before delving into Human Revolution? Don't be. "The hardcore fans are going to make the connections once they analyze the game," Dugas clarified. "The new fans won't feel left behind, though. This game stands on its own."

Deus Ex: Human Revolution for PS3

Eidos Montreal is very confident in the PS3 version. "Since the beginning, it was very important for us to not treat the PS3 version as a 'port' — you can trust us on that," Producer Anfossi said. "We've worked that way in the past with other games, and it was crazy." One example is the way the studio focused on tuning the PS3 version to the nuances of the DualShock 3 controller. "The analog sticks and buttons are different, and we tweaked them independently to ensure that everything is tight," Anfossi said. "We get the best out of the controller based on its own strengths."

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a way for Eidos Montreal to lure top talent. "When we started Eidos Montreal, we had to build a studio, hire a team, and buy new technology," Producer David Anfossi said. "Montreal has a lot of different game studios and a lot of talented people, but it's very competitive." To ensure that the fledgling studio would attract the sharpest minds possible, Anfossi's team examined the Eidos IP portfolio carefully before greenlighting its first game. "We saw Deus Ex and we thought, "Nice!" We knew that would attract very, very talented people." Director Jean-Francois Dugas agreed. "It was a good strategy because when they approached me about Deus Ex, my eyes opened. If they had come to me with Scooby Doo, I might have stayed where I was. [laughter]"

The art direction was inspired by the Renaissance. "We knew that transhumanism would be one of the main themes, so we started to dig for artistic connections," Director Dugas explained. "And Leonardo Da Vinci kept coming up." It didn't take long to find a connection between the massive cultural and intellectual upheaval of the Renaissance and the dawn of transhumanism in Deus Ex: Human Revolution. "During the Renaissance, humanity started to understand our nature from the inside-out as opposed to looking up at the sky and hoping for the best. We started to improve our bodies and heal ourselves more efficiently, improving our life expectancy."

Enter transhumanism, with its emphasis on surpassing human limitations by blending flesh with cutting-edge technology. "The Renaissance was a big stepping stone in our evolution," Dugas said, "and we saw transhumanism as being the next step." The team began integrating the architecture and visual touchstones of the Renaissance into the game, but in ways that supported the story. "The characters that have more Renaissance-inspired clothing — the collars, the patterns on the shoulders — tend to be on the pro-transhumanism side. The more conservative characters who are opposed to transhumanism wear clothing inspired by the look of Middle Age peasants."

The rich black-and-gold color scheme is also a nod to the Renaissance, a time period when candlelight bathed rooms in golden hues. "The gold also represents the Icarus myth, getting closer to the sun. The black represents falling into the sea, people working in the shadows, the dystopian future, and conspiracies. We touch on the benefits of transhumanism, but also the potential dangers."

The soundtrack was inspired by John Carpenter, Blade Runner, and the original Deus Ex. Lead Audio Designer Steve Szczepkowski drew soundtrack inspiration from the usual suspects, cyberpunk classics such as Blade Runner and The Matrix. "But I also went back to some favorites like Escape from New York. I really like John Carpenter films for that, always very moody without being busy." Die-hard Deus Ex fans will also be happy to learn that the theme from the original game will be making a comeback of sorts. "I can confirm that the original theme is in the game, in all its glory," Szczepkowski said, "just perhaps not where you may expect it." As with the game's artistic direction, Composer Michael McCann's synthesizer-heavy score highlights the underlying tension in the game's world. "Thematically, we used synthesizers versus organic instruments and played with that as a representation of the augmentation debate — pro and con," Szczepkowski explained. "Synths are a lot of fun in that they can do so much. They can sound clean and airy or dirty and mechanical…we support the humanism side with natural instruments such as choir vocals, strings and so on."

Conspiracy theorists will find plenty of fodder. The original Deus Ex was a product of pre-millennial paranoia, whisking players to a host of shadowy locations including Area 51 and introducing characters such as The Illuminati and the Knights Templar. Deus Ex: Human Revolution will follow suit, though the details remain appropriately murky. "It's a fictional world, it's a fictional conspiracy, but it's infused with real issues to discover," Dugas hinted tenatively. "I don't want to go into details, but you'll recognize things from the real world as well as fantasy elements. You might go to places that don't exist, necessarily, but that some people believe exist."

SOCOM 4 PlayStation Plus Beta is Live, Play Schedule for 3/22 to 3/28

SOCOM 4: Bomb Squad

Our first week of private beta testing for SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs has been incredibly helpful. Though the participants were limited to the "invite only" crowd, their feedback has been phenomenal — with tens of thousands of posts filled with opinions, suggestions, comments and more pouring into our beta forum.

Starting today, it's time for PlayStation Plus members to get their turn as they join the existing testers for the next phase of our pre-release examination. Though similar to last week's schedule, this week's agenda is a bit different. Here's what game types you can expect to see starting today:

· Tuesday (3/22) – Suppression, Classic Suppression, Scrum (Custom), Community Day Classic (Custom)

· Wednesday (3/23) – Uplink, Classic Uplink, Suppression, Classic Suppression

· Thursday (3/24) – Last Defense, Classic Last Defense, Uplink, Classic Uplink

· Friday (3/25) – Bomb Squad (LINK: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/03/04/socom-4-bomb-squad-revealed-beta-release-details/), Classic Bomb Squad, Last Defense, Classic Last Defense

· Saturday (3/26) – Sniper Alley (Custom), Last Defense Run 'n Gun (Custom), Bomb Squad, Classic Bomb Squad

· Sunday (3/27) – Scrum (Custom), Community Day Classic (Custom), Sniper Alley (Custom), Last Defense Run 'n Gun (Custom)

· Monday (3/28) – Suppression, Classic Suppression, Scrum (Custom), Community Day Classic (Custom)

SOCOM 4: Bomb SquadSocom 4 Screen 5

If you missed last week's post, the multiplayer beta includes two maps, Port Authority and Assault & Battery, and offers a variety of built-in game-types and custom game-types:

Suppression: The SOCOM take on team deathmatch.

Last Defense: Capture controls points, discover the enemy base and destroy it.

Uplink: Steal enemy data and deliver it to your base.

Bomb Squad: Defend your bomb technician while he disarms enemy explosives.

Sniper Alley (Custom): An 8 vs. 8 version of Classic Suppression with higher damage. Weapons are limited to sniper rifles, shotguns, smoke grenades and poison gas.

Last Defense Run ‘n Gun (Custom): Faster movement speed and reduced damage are applied to 16 vs. 16 Last Defense with weapons restricted to only shotguns and SMGs.

Scrum (Custom): Suppression is given rule tweaks of no respawn, faster movement and higher damage, while sniper rifles, frag grenades, concussion grenades and poison gas are disallowed.

Community Day Classic (Custom): A medley featuring Classic versions of all four game types (Suppression, Last Defense, Uplink and Bomb Squad) with increased speed and weapon restrictions placed on ranged explosives. Each game type is played over 11 five-minute rounds.

All built-in game-types (re: not "Custom") will be playable in both the Standard and Classic variations. Standard mode closely mimics the single-player experience, while Classic harkens back to older SOCOM titles with increased movement speeds, round-based play, no player respawns and the lack of health regeneration. Our Custom types mix and match a number of game settings, delivering fresh takes on our core rule sets.

As before, after you’ve had a chance to play the beta, we’d love to hear your feedback! Once you’ve downloaded the beta and played a complete match, you’ll then gain access to our private beta forums on SOCOM.com where you can share your stories with other players and leave us your feedback. SOCOM has always been a very player-driven franchise and your opinions are very important to us, so please let us know what you think! We'll see you again next week on the SOCOM blog with an updated schedule, or you can keep updated on our latest agenda through our in-game news feed.

Outland Hits PSN This Spring With Two Co-Op Modes and More

Outland for PS3 (PSN)

Last fall, I got a first look at Outland, a side-scrolling action game that casts you as an urban sophisticate-turned-spiritual warrior. The dreamlike visuals, fluid platform mechanics, and sharp sword-based combat pointed to a fascinating PSN game. Since then, developer Housemarque (creators of PSN classics Dead Nation and Super Stardust HD has been busy fleshing out the game with details that will make fans of the classic 2D side-scroller Castlevania: Symphony of the Night beam with delight.

A gorgeously illustrated introductory cinematic introduces you to the protagonist, a nameless, faceless modern-day urban dweller haunted by visions of a vast wheel, endlessly turning. Maddened by the visions and unable to find relief, the protagonist seeks out a mystic shaman who guides him on a path of spiritual awakening and alerts him to a timeless, cyclical battle with a pair of god-like Sisters who created the world and now seek to destroy it. Guess what? The fate of the world is now in your hands. Lucky you!

"The Sisters are the final bosses in the game," explained Producer Adam Sarasohn. "They are the ones causing this conflict." You'll learn this firsthand in the opening moments of the game when you dive into a playable vision set 30,000 years in the past. Re-living the conflict as an ancient hero — your spiritual predecessor — this short flashback scene gives you a taste of the most powerful abilities and weapons in the game and sets up the final struggle against the Sisters, though it cuts short just as the ominous battle begins.

Overall, Outland's single-player experience will be familiar to fans of action-platform games such as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. You start out with a limited skill set and gradually gain abilities and more powerful swords as you conquer enemies, uncover ancient artifacts and traverse previously inaccessible locations. But in addition to the sword-swinging combat, Outland's gameplay features a twist. A quick tap of the L2 trigger shifts you between blue and red (light and dark) energy alignments. If you shift to the blue form, you'll harmlessly absorb blue projectiles but remain vulnerable to red projectiles, and vice-versa. Outland's most challenging moments tend to pack the screen with a dizzying number of red-and-blue projectile patterns, forcing you to rapidly shift alignments to survive. This is easier said than done, as many platforms are color-coded as well and require tricky timing to land.

Outland for PS3 (PSN): UnderWorld

We also learned new details about Outland's massive boss battles, particularly one encounter against the High Priestess. Armed with telekinetic abilities, the High Priestess attacks by hurling pieces of the surrounding environment at you. "After a while," Sarasohn teased, "the entire room breaks apart and starts falling, and you're jumping up pieces of rubble while you continue to fight her in mid-air." Then there's the final boss fight again the Sisters, hinted at in the beginning of the game, which will be "particularly challenging" according to Sarasohn.

In addition to the single-player campaign, Outland includes an Arcade mode that will challenge expert players to speed-run through scenarios with the highest score possible. But at PAX East, Sarasohn also revealed that Outland includes robust two-player co-op play in two distinct flavors: Story Co-op and Co-op Challenge rooms. When playing the Story mode with a co-op partner, you'll occasionally uncover portals that unlock Co-Op Challenges. These challenges aren't for the faint of heart. "In the Co-op Challenge rooms, we mess with the existing gameplay rules of Outland," Sarasohn revealed. "In normal co-op Story play, it doesn't matter what your partner does — either player can switch between light and dark alignment as needed." That rule is turned on its head in one Co-op Challenge in which one player controls alignment switching of both players — a tall order when the air is thick with red-and-blue projectiles and you're forced to watch your partner’s back. Then, in a sadistic twist halfway through this particular Co-op Challenge, the other player assumes control of alignment swapping. Like I said: it's not for the faint of heart!

Though Outland's co-op modes are limited to online play, Sarasohn says it's for a good reason. "The reason we did online-only is because we wanted each player to have a full screen so they can see all the puzzles and not have to make blind jumps." Sarasohn explained that Housemarque experimented with a couch co-op mode that constrained both players to one screen, but that players found it frustrating because their movements were limited by the edges of the screen.

With its late-April/early-May PSN release date fast approaching, Outland is shaping up to be a major departure for developer Housemarque. What do you think about their new gameplay style? Let us know in the comments!
