Step Up to the Plate: MLB ’13 The Show Hitting Enhancements Detailed
Hitting is such an important aspect in baseball, and it's an area we continually strive to make as realistic as possible. Last year we introduced our True Ball Physics engine to the franchise for ultra-realistic ball physics. This year we've done even more work to really make this area of the game as dynamic as possible with true to life outcomes. Take a look at what we've done to make hitting in MLB ’13 The Show more accessible to everyone.
We really want to make hitting more streamlined for players. Beginner mode allows people who have never played The Show — or have struggled with it — to learn the fundamentals of hitting. It's meant to teach you the basics of Plate Discipline, Pitch Recognition and Timing.
This mode uses adaptive A.I. that only advances as you do. If you take longer to get the hang of hitting in The Show, you won’t be forced to advance. The A.I. will only advance once you’ve passed a certain threshold at each level.
In regards to the Push/Pull hitting Trajectories Engine, MLB.com gives us spray chart data for all current MLB players. This data is then imported into a program, which tells us what type of hitter the player should be in game. All hitters in the game fall under one of five hitter types: Push, Pull, Balanced, Extreme Push or Extreme Pull. Both A.I. and human players will now hit more balls to their preferred side based on this attribute. Generated players in franchise and Road to the Show modes are given a random hitter type. However, it's a weighted random number so you won't see a ton of guys in the draft from year-to-year who are labeled as extreme push hitters etc…
Furthermore, the timing window across all difficulty settings has been increased to allow everyone more time to react to the ball. While this change will lead to more offense, it's relative to each difficulty setting. For example: if you hit .220 on All-Star last year, and you play the exact same way this year, you will probably hit in the .260 range.
We've detailed what was in the video, now here's some info about what wasn't in the video: There are a total of 16 batting views, and you can even create your own. Every batting view in the game has been re-created to increase pitch recognition. You will see more variability between gold glove type fielders and those players who aren't known for their fielding prowess. Lastly, there are now less ground rule doubles in the game, and wind will now have less of an effect on the ball.

This Week in the PlayStation Community
Although the former Community Spotlight ended earlier this month, it's back this week in a new form. Welcome to the evolution of the weekly Community Spotlight. We're transforming it and providing you more of a weekly go-to source for what's hot and what's happening. Join us, the PlayStation Community team, as we share what's going on, new events, give mad props to some fantastic gamer creations, and more. There's so much going on in the PlayStation universe, and we're here to lead you on that journey.
I'm your host this week, though you'll see my buddies Morgan, Kristine, Paul, and maybe even Matt, take turns at the helm. Let's go!
Anyone who knows me knows I am hyper creative and really love seeing the creative spark in others. We would be seriously missing out without a spotlight on relevant gaming culture via awesome things like fan art, cool cosplay, and other fan-made content. To start out, I'm sharing some very amazing cosplay from one of our own, a PlayStation co-worker of ours named Melissa who goes by PSN ID moemarston. In her spare time, she's always designing and crafting new outfits of her favorite PlayStation characters. She's internally famous for her Nathan Drake (a female version, and quite well-done, I might add), and new this month, she's made a Chloe Frazer, both from the Uncharted series. Doesn't this inspire you to make your own awesome outfit so you can strut your geekiness with pride?

Trapt – Reborn
The dust has settled a bit after two major departures from Trapt, drummer Aaron "Monty" Montgomery and Rob Torres. While Reborn features Torres for the last time, lead singer Chris Taylor Brown took on the lion's share of guitar work on top of his regular duties, which includes producing the album. The band has chugged along since their breakout single, "Headstrong," and in spite of the shifts of these members and others, they've managed to be "reborn" all the way to this, their 5th album. Trapt kicked off their tour late last week and will end in Upstate New York on February 10th.

Beats Slider Free This Week on PlayStation Mobile
Last week saw the launch of a PlayStation Mobile promotion that will offer six free games over six weeks, starting with Samurai Beatdown. This week, the free PlayStation Mobile game is Beats Slider. Master the puzzle gameplay by sliding different note blocks into sequences to create catchy electro tunes and compete for the best times online!
Recently, we invited FuturLab's Managing Director James Marsden to explain the ins and outs of the game on PlayStation.Blog. Here's what separates Beats Slider from its contemporaries:
Each block of the sliding puzzle represents MIDI data, which is basically musical notation that computers can read. MIDI data can be used to play back any instrument, synthesizer, drum loop or whatever you throw at it, just by changing the instruments or samples that are triggered by it.
So what we've done is allow the player to push a drum loop MIDI pattern into a synthesizer slot, or a melody pattern into a bass line track, and every combination you could think of within the limits of each level. It was quite the brain teaser to write music that can be rearranged in this way whilst still sounding good, but we managed it.
What we're also doing is teaching people how to solve those blasted slider puzzles. Some people are just able to solve them, but people like you (and me) are often left frowning with frustration. No more. If you play Beats Slider, you will learn how to solve every slider puzzle that will ever be made, whilst also listening to catchy music like this.

Skyrim Add-Ons Land on PS3 in February, 50% off for One Week
Today we're excited to announce that, next month, we'll be releasing all of Skyrim's add-on content on PlayStation Store. The 1.8 title update will also release just prior to the launch of Dragonborn. We'll keep you posted as release dates get finalized both on our end and with Sony for each and its various languages. Last but not least, each add-on will be 50% off during its launch week on PSN.
Ready to learn more about the content you'll be playing? Here's a quick overview:
Dragonborn
In Dragonborn, you’ll journey off the coast of Morrowind, to the island of Solstheim. Encounter new towns, dungeons, and quests, as you traverse the ash wastes and glacial valleys of this new land. Become more powerful with shouts that bend the will of your enemies, and even tame dragons. Your fate, and the fate of Solstheim, hangs in the balance as you face off against your deadliest adversary – the first Dragonborn.

Hearthfire
In Hearthfire, you can purchase land and build your own home from the ground up – from a simple one-room cottage to a sprawling compound complete with an armory, alchemy laboratory, stable, garden, and more. Use all-new tools like the drafting table and carpenter's workbench to transform quarried stone, clay, and sawn logs into structures and furnishings. Even transform your house into a home by adopting children.
- Choose Your Land – Choose from property in the salt marshes of Hjaalmarch, the forests of Falkreath, or the vast tundra of The Pale. For the more ambitious landowner, purchase multiple plots and start building a real estate empire.
- Customize Your Home – Expand your home with a variety of room combinations including an armory, alchemy tower, kitchen, trophy room and more. Grow plants in your new greenhouse, cultivate slaughterfish in the fish hatchery, house your Arcane Enchanter in the enchanting tower, or display your latest conquest in the trophy room. Add additional features like stables, mills, smelters, gardens and more.
- New Objectives and Interactions – Guard your home from unwanted visitors like marauding kidnappers, armed bandits, and skeever infestations. Turn almost any follower into your personal steward to improve and protect your home. Or if you require more help, hire a personal bard or carriage driver to ease the burdens of home ownership.
- Adoption – Transform your house into a home with Hearthfire's all-new adoption system. Adopt children and discover new ways to interact with your family. Play games with the kids, allow them to have pets and gain new bonuses from having a family.
Dawnguard
In Dawnguard, you'll face the Vampire Lord Harkon, who has returned to power. By using the Elder Scrolls, he seeks to do the unthinkable — end the sun itself. Will you join the ancient order of the Dawnguard and stop him? Or will you become a Vampire Lord yourself? Featuring an all new faction questline and locations, the ultimate choice will be yours.
- New Weapons, Armor, Spells and Shouts – Join the Dawnguard and wield all new crossbows and craft your own arrows, bolts, and Dragonbone weapons. Use new weapons, armor, spells and shouts, including the Soul Tear shout – that rips the souls from your enemies and turns them into your minions.
- Become a Vampire Lord – Side with the vampires and become a Vampire Lord yourself. Hover across the ground, turn yourself into bats, levitate your enemies as you drain their life, and more. The Vampire Lord features its own upgradable perk system.
