Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One Limited Beta Launches, Win a Spot Now

It’s my pleasure to announce that we have just launched a limited beta for Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One. Our team in North Carolina has been working hard to build the ultimate co-op Ratchet & Clank adventure, and we hope that in the coming weeks you'll get to try out the one- to four-player mayhem. The beta will enable you and up to three friends to go online and play through two sections of the game.

The first scenario is the opening level of Luminopolis where Ratchet, Clank, Captain Qwark and the evil Dr. Nefarious are forced to band together when Nefarious's light-eating Z'Grute is unleashed upon the city. The second area of the beta jumps you deeper into the action with The Vertigus Cliffs, set in the N.E.S.T. area of the treacherous Planet Magnus is a unique area full of vertical views that look stunning in 3D. The Vertigus Cliff level will also give you a chance to check out some mechanics from later in the game, including use of your weapon wheel and many of the crazy Ratchet & Clank weapons you've come to know and love. New weapons like the Frost Cannon, Plasma Bomb Launcher and Warmonger give you a great assortment of guns to play with, but old favorites like the Combuster are back as well. There are LOTS of weapons in the beta, as well as character's special ability.

Right now, this limited beta is only available to folks who possess a special code – so if you attended our Community Day, or have won a contest, you should be checking your e-mail right about now! Haven't won yet? Be sure to follow Insominac Games on Twitter and Like us on Facebook for some new contests and opportunities to get in on the limited beta. This week's update brings the final title of the PlayStation Network PLAY event: SEGA's Renegade Ops! Blending frantic top-down gameplay, a crazy variety of vehicles and weapons, and lest we forget the 4 player co-op; Renegade Ops ends PSN PLAY with a bang! Another PSN title coming in hot is From Dust, hitting the Store today. When Resistance 3 Met Kevin Butler

As we lead up to Resistance 3's launch this Tuesday, we wanted to start your holiday weekend right with the two television commercials you will be seeing for Resistance 3 over the next few weeks. These commercials will be airing during NFL games and my personal favorite, college football, as well as series premieres of some of the biggest shows on TV.

Why two commercials, you ask? Well, we have two great approaches for Resistance 3. One involves the story of Joseph Capelli's journey. In some ways this ties us back to the very first live-action prologue trailer that showed us the first glimpse of Resistance 3's grim new world. Here you get a glimpse of the emotions and story that make up our game. We really feel like this ad wonderfully captures and encapsulates Resistance 3. Take a look:

Hope you liked that commercial and it got you pumped for the game's launch. That said, what's a huge PS3 exclusive without a Kevin Butler commercial? Maybe it's best if you just watch.

Amy: The Faces of Horror

If you've been following the development of Amy, you probably know that we're trying to make a unique survival-horror game for PSN. As explained in my previous post, we're working hard to bring a different gameplay based on a deep interaction between Lana, a young woman who is the lead character, and Amy, an eight year-old child, set in a horrific environment. Soon, we'll give you many more details on some of the key elements of the gameplay.

But for now, we wanted to show you that, even for a downloadable game, we're trying our best to bring you real flesh-and-blood characters. You can meet two of them in the new videos below.

First, a quick primer on the world of Amy. It's 2035, and global warming has intensified beyond mankind's control. Floods, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are claiming lives with increasing regularity. And in Silver City, the site of a recent comet impact, a mysterious viral outbreak has begun transforming a large percentage of the populace into horrific monstrosities. This is the final straw for Father John, a priest in Silver City: He's convinced that the outbrerak is final proof that Armageddon is near. From his shelter-church, he tries to organize the human survivors to resist what he sees as a demonic invasion. The second character, Professor Raymond, is much more mysterious. Lana, the lead character of Amy, often refers to Raymond when speaking on the phone with another mysterious character, Lavigna – a woman she seems to rely on.

As you can see in the videos above, our goal is to create characters that convey emotions and that show their feelings physically, not just through dialogue or scenarios. Moreso than any other genre, horror games are based on what characters want – not just what they are doing.

For secondary characters, it might be ok to take a more traditional approach, to make them what you'd expect. But for the primary characters, facial features, expressions and the way they move are things we spent a lot of time on. Above all else, one of the most important aspects lies in their eyes. As you can see from the video, Father John's eyes are not only highly detailed, but appear very human – at least, as close as we could get! And this is not just a technical and artistic challenge; the subtlety of human expression has a real impact in the game, especially for Amy and Lana.

As you probably already know, Amy is impaired – she doesn't speak. Hence, in order for Amy to communicate with the player, her body language and facial expressions are of critical importance. If Amy sees a gruesome creature behind you, she won't have to yell: you will know, just by looking at her face and body language, that she's terrified.

BloodRayne: Betrayal for PSN – All the Bloody Details

We've been working ridiculously hard on BloodRayne: Betrayal for quite some time now and I can't tell you how stoked I am to tell you that it's launching next week, on September 6th, as part of the annual PSN PLAY promotion.

For those of you who might not know, WayForward has been working on a full-on 2D re-imagining of the iconic BloodRayne franchise. BloodRayne: Betrayal is all about deep and varied combat, tough-as-nails platforming, smooth and fluid animations, and of course, buckets and buckets of blood! We've previously been fortunate enough to work with the game's publisher, Majesco, on A Boy and His Blob. It was a great experience, so when they approached us with the opportunity to reboot BloodRayne, we jumped at it! With the power of the PS3 behind us, we have crafted our first HD side-scrolling game, and it looks frickin' amazing! We've combined a rich fluid dynamic system that allows for superbly splattery blood, unique screen-distorting refraction effects for all of Rayne's slicing and dicing, tons of layers of background parallax, and literally thousands of frames of character animations to make one of the prettiest digital HD games you'll ever play.

Popular elements have returned from the original titles, such as the Brimstone Society and Rayne's evil father Kagan. The vampire-hunting Brimstone Society has been updated to resemble a sort of inefficient SWAT team, and Kagan is much more theatrical and dangerous. Overall, we wanted to retain the sexy, campy flavor of the original games, but add some more style, sophistication, and excellent gameplay to the mix. When the classical metal soundtrack swells as everything slows down to better show the explosions of blood and viscera, you'll know you are playing something special.

With tons of vicious and devastating moves to unleash, it wouldn't be right if Rayne didn't have a host of baddies to unleash them upon. You'll start out honing your hack 'n slash skills by carving up on legions of Victorian vampire thugs, before moving on to bigger, faster and meaner enemies. Plan on facing both quick-moving Wheelers ( twisted monsters complete with long and sharp arm blades) and the juggernaut hammer-wielding Blood Balloons, which are an absolute blast to blow up! As cool as these guys may be, this game has insane boss fights…you'll get a taste for just how much we turned things up to 11 with the first boss, the mechanical monstrosity Crab Puncher. Just try to sever his limbs whilst riding on his back as he frantically clambers down a bottomless shaft!

We saved the best for last, however; the final boss battle is beyond epic and totally unforgettable…trust us!

Resistance 3: What Happened at Abbey Road

When we set out to make Resistance 3, we wanted to make it an emotional, personal story of Joseph Capelli's harrowing journey to New York City in the face of certain death. It's a brutal game, showing how humanity struggles to survive under the crushing weight of the Chimera. A big element of that was making sure that our score and soundtrack represented this new emotional payload. It was a sincere pleasure on the part of Insomniac Games to work with Composer Boris Salchow on the score for Resistance 3. Boris was here constantly, seeing the game and talking to our team. He wanted to be invested in the story and create a truly great score, and we're confident that he's done just that.

It was also a pleasure to have the score for Resistance 3 recorded by an orchestra at the famous Abbey Road Studios in London, The same studio that The Beatles recorded in was used to record our score and our colleagues in Europe were there to give you this behind-the-scenes look at the Resistance 3 score and orchestra recording session at Abbey Road.

We're very excited about the release of Resistance 3 next week.
