New on Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited

Yesterday we announced the exclusive music video for Passion Pit's "Cry Like a Ghost," featuring almost two minutes of additional footage. Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheibert – collectively known as DANIELS – the video, off their recent album Gossamer, debuted on the Sony Entertainment Network Blog and we're excited to share it with you here:

You can also get the entire download on new music this week on the Music Unlimited service on the Sony Entertainment Network blog, but here are this week's highlights:

Lil Wayne – I Am Not A Human Being II

New on SEN 3-29-2013

Lil Wayne returns a little less than two years after the release of The Carter IV, arguably one of Weezy's most commercially successful albums (by way of hit singles like "How to Love," and "Mirrors"). As is core to many of his "themed" multi-albums, this one serves as the follow up to 2010's I Am Not a Human Being, but also features unused material from The Carter III and The Carter IV. With a little more time to concentrate, as opposed to the pre-jail-time production of the last album, Wayne takes his usually rough-around-the-edges lyrical content and turns it up a notch . . . we'll let you use your imagination on that one.

If You Like: Eminem, T.I., Wiz Khalifa
Recommended Track: "Rich as F**k (ft. 2 Chainz)"

Blake Shelton – Based on a True Story…

New on SEN 3-29-2013

After whetting the appetites of his fans with a Christmas album last year, (even featuring his Mom on one of the tracks) Blake Shelton brings and album full of new material. Just in time for the season premiere of The Voice, where he serves as a celebrity mentor. Before he became a household name on the wildly popular show, he was well-known in the country world with seven other albums under his belt. His bi-coastal life hasn't jaded the country boy, as he picked songs proudly declaring the big country truths: beer, denim, dusty roads and family. So much family, in fact, that he features his wife Miranda Lambert's girl-group Pistol Annies on the first track, "Boys 'Round Here."

If You Like: Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, Gary Allan
Recommended Track: "Grandaddy's Gun"

OneRepublic – Native

New on SEN 3-29-2013

While OneRepublic certainly hasn't been the loudest of bands in their genre, they've managed to keep a consistent presence the last six years since the release ofDreaming Out Loud (featuring "Apologize"). Giants like "Stop and Stare," "Secrets," and "Good Life," quietly rumbled to major success through tv/film licensing and radio play. The lead single from Native, "Feel Again," has also gained traction as the band toured and singer Ryan Tedder continued to be a highly in-demand, GRAMMY winning songwriter and producer (at the helm for Adele, Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce, among others). The band will be spending April overseas, wrapping up in Ireland on April 29th.

If You Like: Maroon 5, Jason Mraz, Fun.
Recommended Track: "If I Lose Myself"

Other Albums Available This Week (3/26/13)

The Strokes – Comedown Machine
Depeche Mode – Delta Machine
Thompson Square – Just Feels Good
Sevendust – Black Out The Sun
Gerardo Ortiz – Sold Out – En Vivo Desde El NOKIA Theatre L.A. Live

Game Developers: PhyreEngine 3.5 Arrives Today for PS3, PS4, PS Vita

Phyre Engine

We’ve made it easy for game developers to make their games available on PlayStation. In addition to a great set of development tools, PlayStation developers gain access to a Software Development Kit that includes a free multi-platform game engine called PhyreEngine.

The latest version of this popular games development framework, PhyreEngine 3.5, is releasing to game developers and publishers worldwide right now! Today's update builds upon the PS4 support introduced in previous versions. With PhyreEngine 3.5, PS4 developers will finally be able to leverage the platform's advanced compute functionality, in addition to a host of other development-related features. Another convenient addition to PhyreEngine 3.5 is the ability for developers to make in-game edits on the fly and see their results immediately, without a lengthy wait for the changes to be recompiled.

Even if you've never heard of PhyreEngine, you're probably familiar with some of the games that use its technology: Journey and RocketBirds: Hardboiled Chicken, just to name a few. PhyreEngine was initiated by Sony Computer Entertainment to streamline cross-platform game development between PS3, PS4, and PS Vita. We've designed and evolved the framework based on feedback from our energetic developer community, which comprises dozens of studios across more than 90 games in all.

In honor of Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this week, we wanted to share thoughts from some studios that have integrated PhyreEngine. And if you're a developer and you're interested in using PhyreEngine, click here for full details.

"At thatgamecompany, we used PhyreEngine on all of our games. For a small studio like us, it was helpful to start working from day one with a full-featured codebase specifically optimized for our target platform. Even more important was the well documented source and friendly support team. This allowed us to cleanly and easily add our own custom features on top as we grew more ambitious and specialized with our games."

– John Edwards, Lead Engineer at thatgamecompany
“Creat has used PhyreEngine successfully for both Pinballistik and Germinator, and we’ve started up two exciting new projects for PS3 and PS Vita using the latest version of PhyreEngine. We particularly like the fact that key features are constantly being added by the PhyreEngine team, along with the tremendous technical support provided free-of-charge… a rare thing these days!”

– Jason Benham, Technical Director of Creat Studios.
“As a small company, PhyreEngine allowed us to not only quickly develop the PlayStation Vita version of escapeVektor it also allows us to prototype content on PlayStation platforms concurrently with the other platforms we support. We are looking forward to continuing our support for PlayStation platforms with PhyreEngine as a core component of our tool chain.”

– Nic Watt, Creative Director, Nnooo.
"We used PhyreEngine for “Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken” for the PS3, which enabled us to release a great looking stereoscopic 3D game @ 60 fps per eye (120 fps) last year. We continued using PhyreEngine to bring Rocketbirds to the PS Vita this year where it counter-tilts at full res without having to compromise on visual quality. Its flexible (and free) licensing has allowed us to expand the game to other platforms, such as Steam. We are currently working on “Rocketbirds 2 Evolution” and our work and experience with PhyreEngine puts us in a pretty good position to try and get this onto the PS4."

– Sian Yue Tan, Founder, Ratloop Asia
"PhyreEngine gave us the tools to develop Knytt Underground for PS3 and PS Vita at the same time, within months. It’s not just the engine itself, but also the extensive support and tools from the PhyreEngine-team throughout development that made our lives much easier."

– Maarten de Koning, Managing Director & Founder, Green Hill Studios
When we were asked to port Hotline Miami from PC on GameMaker tech to PS3 and PS Vita, there was no arguing what kind of tech to use for our rendering pipeline. PhyreEngine promises to deliver a unified engine across PS3, PS Vita and PC and it kept its promise. Our team was able to focus on creating a reverse-engineered GameMaker simulation on PC that also works flawlessly on PS3 and PS Vita without writing a single piece of custom code or specialised code paths to cater those other platforms. It’s quite remarkable really. The PhyreEngine team is a bunch of very clever people that have a common goal which is to help other people build better products, asking nothing in return. It’s insane almost!”

God of War: Ascension Update 1.03 Deploys Today

Champions! With God of War: Ascension out in the wild for two weeks now, we're seeing our ever-growing community becoming a legion of champions in multiplayer and thousands conquering Kratos' latest single-player journey. We've been listening to every bit of constructive feedback on our boards, Twitter, Facebook, here on PlayStation.Blog, and around the internet stratosphere. Rest assured that our development team at Sony Santa Monica is committed to supporting you.

GOWA-HadesMark1

GOWA-ZeusMark1 GOWA-PoseidonMark1

FACTOID: Ares is the most popular God allegiance thus far, but also has players with the lowest overall skill rating. Hades is the second most popular, and the highest skill rated players, evil incarnate FTW!

We're pleased to announce the release of our latest 1.03 update, deploying today. Though this update may be small, it throws an added support line at the Trial of Archimedes, and enhances multiplayer customization with a new appearance feature for your Champion – we call them "Marks".

We received extensive feedback from the community that the "Trial of Archimedes" section (Chapter 28) near the end of the game was excessively challenging. In every God of War game, establishing a well-paced difficulty ramp towards the end of the game is paramount to us. Based on player response, the degree of challenge offered here was short of our goal of being perfectly balanced.

In the 1.03 update, at the end of each elevator stage (three total), players will now receive a measured amount of green health orbs and a nominal amount of blue magic orbs. This change affects all difficulty levels. We are confident this revision will address feedback regarding "Trial of Archimedes" while still preserving the level of challenge appropriate for this late section of the game.

Thank you for your understanding and patience. Good fortunes in your quest to conquer the Trial of Archimedes and complete Kratos' ascension!

As noted, 1.03 also adds "Marks" for added customization to your Champion in multiplayer, and 8 additional new tints, including "Ash". Now you have an opportunity to become a "Marked Warrior". These are the six mark's we've added in this update, with more to come:

  • Mark of the Thief, for HADES
  • Mark of the Trojan, for ALL
  • Mark of the Spartan, for ALL
  • Mark of the Legionnaire, for ARES
  • Mark of the Mercenary, for ZEUS
  • Mark of the Deep, for POSEIDON

Unfortunately, the time necessary to diagnose and explore audio issues cited by many of our fans during their play experiences made a solution in time for inclusion in the 1.03 update unfeasible. Despite this, we are still very aware of these reports, we continue to monitor user experiences in this regard, and we are working as quickly as possible to find a fix. We understand that this issue is of particular frustration for many of you in the community; your patience is greatly appreciated!

This is just the beginning of post-launch support for God of War: Ascension. As stated previously, we have an influx of DLC in the weeks ahead to support your strategic play-style, and an unannounced 4th weapon class. We're also exploring other new enhancements we can't disclose just yet, however you can try asking The Oracle (aka @SonySantaMonica) – you never know.

Now do well warrior, ascend! And stay in touch with everything God of War on our official site.

Exclusive Bioshock Infinite Audio Mode for Pulse – Elite Edition Headset

Bioshock Infinite Pulse Elite Wireless Headset Profile

Tomorrow marks a big day for world-acclaimed studio Irrational Games with the release of Bioshock Infinite, so it's only suitable that we mark the occasion with something special. For the first time, we are partnering with a game developer to deliver a specially crafted audio experience exclusive to PlayStation. Tonight at midnight, we are launching a new audio mode for the PULSE-Elite Edition Headset designed especially for BioShock Infinite. Better still, it will be free.

Why a custom audio mode? Irrational Games wanted to elevate the dark world of BioShock Infinite to a new level by providing a richer gameplay experience. We worked with them to take advantage of our new BassImpact technology embedded in the Pulse-Elite headset to create a sound profile that enables players to feel gunshots and explosions in a much more dynamic and powerful way.

Bioshock Infinite Pulse Elite Wireless Headset Profile

Engineers on both teams worked together to tie the pulses from BassImpact to key audio elements in the game, creating a more immersive experience as you fight your way through Columbia as Booker DeWitt. We examined characteristics of sounds such as frequency and amplitude as well as gameplay data like attack times, then tailored the strength of the BassImpact actuator responses to complement those in-game sounds. This means that the pulse you feel from a gunshot will be different than the pulses you feel from an explosion. Irrational's audio director Patrick Balthrop was overheard remarking that the game sounds "excellent" on the Pulse-Elite. You can download the BioShock Infinite audio mode at no cost from the free Pulse-Elite Manager App which launched in December. You can find both on PlayStation Store.

For those of you who don't have the Pulse-Elite Edition headset yet, we have something for you as well. From March 26th (midnight Pacific Time tonight) to April 9th, 2013, when you buy Bioshock Infinite you'll get $ 20 off the purchase of the Pulse-Elite headset at participating retailers*.

Stay tuned for more news about game-specific audio profiles from your favorite franchises. Now get out there and find Elizabeth!

*Participating Retailers: GameStop, Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Hastings, Transworld, Nebraska Furniture Mart

A prelude to the classic horror film Psycho, the series takes a contemporary glimpse into Norman's formative years and reveals how he became one of the most infamous murderers of all time. Justin TimberlakeThe 20/20 Experience

New on SEN 3-22-2013

You would have had to have been asleep the last few months to miss the many ways that Justin Timberlake has been hyping up the release of his first album in nearly seven years. From a GRAMMY® performance to hosting & performing on Saturday Night Live to a not-so-secret show at last week's SXSW, Timberlake has the spotlight permanently set on him. It might be easy to take someone so rare (singer, dancer, actor & entrepreneur), but he has earned the respect of fans and industry alike. He has managed to stay non-controversial while being at the forefront of the conversation. Even after all this time, his musical direction hasn't changed much, drawing influence from R&B and soul while taking what he's learned the last few years and refining it. If for whatever reason you didn't see it before, your vision (and his) should be clear now.

Walk Off the EarthR.E.V.O.

New on SEN 3-22-2013

After releasing an EP under the same name last year, Walk off the Earth is ready to show the world exactly what they've got. The YouTube sensations that brought you the Gotye-on-one-guitar and Taylor Swift covers have been producing their own original content for years and are now able to use their overnight fame to get more of it out to their fans. Known for their live performance prowess, the pure joy of their stage show echoes through each track. After years of independently making the wheels turn, this bigger platform will hopefully highlight the skills of this band's talented members and establish an identity all their own.

Kacey MusgravesSame Trailer Different Park

New on SEN 3-22-2013

Country music may be known as much for their developing artists as the superstars, with artists like Taylor Swift, Lady Antebellum and Luke Bryan hitting arena level before you can blink. Kacey Musgraves is poised to have a similar trajectory, first gaining notoriety from placing 7th on USA's singing competition show, Nashville Star. She had previously self-released albums before penning an official deal, releasing the single "Merry Go 'Round," to a wave of critical acclaim. Produced by industry stalwarts who were at the helm for artists like Kenny Chesney and The Band Perry previously, the single struck a cord with traditional country fans and even pockets of "hipster" critics. Her song, "Undermine," was also used during an episode of the ABC show Nashville.

PlayStation Community Update: Level Up Game Center

In April of 2010, Robert Steele (PSN ID: rsteele), reached out to the PlayStation community through the Community Forums to get some feedback on his unique position. He was "presented with a business opportunity with unlimited possibilities," and as should anyone with such an opportunity, Robert turned to his peers for advice.

The plea was simple; if I'm going to make a game lounge, what would other gamers want to see in such a creation? Gamers of all types hopped in the discussion and gave Robert some much needed guidance. In a few months, Robert had his lounge up and running. After a year he was hosting BBQs, gaming marathons and LAN tournaments. Now, almost three years since that first post, Level Up Gaming Center is as strong as ever.

If you're ever in the Augusta, GA area, be sure to drop by Robert's lounge. If you can't make it to Georgia, be sure to support your local game center. If you want to start your own, don't forget to keep your gaming community in mind! Robert didn't, and his dream is now a reality.

PlayStation Community Update 3-22-2013

Level Up Game Center is a brick-and-mortar gamer's lounge in Augusta, GA. Founder Rick Steele turned to the PlayStation Community Forums back in 2010 to gather feedback on what would make a great lounge.

I set aside some time to talk to Robert now that his Lounge and gaming repair shop is a well-established business. Aside from being a great guy, he was also able to share some pretty cool insight. Here's what he had to say:

Paul: What led you to choose a gaming lounge when you had the opportunity to launch a business?

Robert: Some family members wanted another family owned business to place at a location they owned that had a recent vacancy. We talked about several different business ideas including equipment rental and even a tanning salon. After several weeks of brainstorming and research a gaming lounge or LAN center was the one idea that everyone seemed to be interested in. I am very happy that we did not choose to put in a tanning salon. July of this year will be our 3rd anniversary.

Paul: Why did you choose to create a thread in the PlayStation forums looking for feedback, what did you gain from it?

Robert: I had never been to a LAN center or gaming lounge before and I had been a member of the PlayStation forums for a long time. I knew it was one place that we could get a response from gamers who would also be our target customer base. It helped in several ways, there were posts about similar existing businesses, which meant other people were doing what we wanted to do, and they were able to tell me directly what they liked or disliked about those places. Posting there helped us create a space and atmosphere that we knew gamers would love.

Paul: What was the greatest challenge you faced when launching this business, how did you overcome it?

Robert: The biggest challenge was and still is getting the word out that our business is here. Television, radio, and billboard advertising is very expensive so we went the route of social media and word of mouth advertising. I have worked with other video game stores in the area, pizza delivery places, and even larger retailer’s electronic departments helped spread the word about our business. Cross promotional deals with other businesses in the area are a great ways to advertise for very little cost.

Paul: What's the typical demographic for your customer base (age, etc.)?

Robert: Our average customer is male between the ages of 18 and 24. Although I have had customers as old as 76 and as young as 5. The video game audience is much more diverse than most people realize. Ideally Level Up is a place where the whole family: mom, dad, brother, and sister can come and enjoy some aspect of what we have to offer and we do have several families that are frequent visitors.

Paul: About how many visitors do you have in a given month?

Robert: After almost 3 years in business I still see 80 to 100 new customers per month. I’ve had thousands of individuals come through and many of them hold tournaments, have their birthday parties, or attend other special events we hold on a regular basis.

Paul: What are the most popular games at your lounge, how has that evolved over the past couple years?

Robert: The Call of Duty series has always had an enormous following. We’ve held tournaments for Modern Warfare 2 as well as the first Black Ops. PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale has developed a really solid following and is a part of the regular tournaments we hold at our all night events. I have had customers that play through the entire story line of games like Uncharted 3 and God of War 3 in one sitting. Then others play Rock Band or Guitar Hero for hours at a time.

Games are becoming more cinematic with larger worlds, more detailed character development, and more engaging story lines. I believe anyone can look at the differences between games like Borderlands 1 and Borderlands 2 and see that developers are going further and further with what they can offer the players in terms of entertainment and game play.

Paul: What's YOUR favorite game and why?

Robert: It’s very difficult to pick just one game. Warhawk was my favorite and one of the first games I had on the PS3 and I played an absurd amount of time on that game. I also made a lot of lasting friendships and still have a lot of those people on my friends list today. So many games are just point and shoot, Warhawk allowed players to be effective that might not have been the best “shooters” but used communication, the map, strategy, and teamwork to compete against others with more “skill”.

Lately I’ve been playing Borderlands 2 and Tomb Raider. I also really enjoy PSN games like PAIN, Trash Panic, Dungeon Defenders, and Battle Tanks, I like these because they provide hours of quality enjoyment and are relatively cheap.

Paul: Do you plan on expanding the business, if so where?

Robert: I would love to expand and have a laser tag arena attached to the existing lounge. There is a chance that it could be in the same building or some property that is close by. The only issue with that is that I am the only full time employee at Level Up for the time being. I am constantly adding in more stations to keep up with the crowds that show up for our all night events. Currently we reach capacity (50-60 people depending on what they are playing) in about 20-30 minutes after opening the doors. I want to have enough space and as many stations as it takes to let everyone play here during those times!

Paul: What's your greatest experience you've had while running the lounge?

Robert: Any time I can repair a system or console for a customer that is a great feeling. Taking something that’s dead and bringing it back to life is cool even if it’s just a video game console, for some people that might be their only form of entertainment. I also really enjoy introducing customers to games they have never played before, especially if they like the game I suggest.

We’ve done charity events, worked with the local military base, and other community organizations all of which were great experiences. I would have to say creating a community and a location where there are all different people can enjoy one common bond, video games, is by far the coolest thing we’ve done at Level Up.

Paul: What advice would you give to other gamer entrepreneurs?

Robert: Be creative. If you have an idea for a business there are plenty of ways you can make it happen. Chances are there is someone out there that’s willing to talk to you, give you a contact, or a resource that will help you more than you can imagine. The most important person in your plans will be you. You will be the one driving the idea. If you attempt something and it doesn’t work learn from it and try something different. Also networking with the right people will make everything easier. I’m in constant contact with other LAN/lounge owners who are currently operating or are looking to open something similar in their area via http://startalancenter.com.

If you've got an amazing story about how gamers and our communities have helped you, or how you've helped them, let us know. Post in the comments below, or reach out to me on the PlayStation Forums.
