The PlayStation Recap — EVO 2011 Edition
This weekend, I’m on site at the “World Series of Fighting Games,” the EVO Championship Series, located in fabulous (chaotic, disorienting) Las Vegas! Top fighting game champions from around the world have gathered to duke it out in Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Tekken 6, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat, plus a host of other niche fighting games, culminating in a nail-biting series of finals Sunday night. Luckily, PlayStation Home users can watch the battles live for free. Not a bad way to spend the weekend!
In addition to the competition, Capcom and Namco Bandai are showing off upcoming fighters such as Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Street Fighter X Tekken, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 to the throngs of hungry fighting-game fans. I’m hoping to score some interviews with Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono and Tekken creator Katsuhiro Harada, among others. PlayStation Blog Hands on with Need For Speed: The Run
Need for Speed: The Run is the boldest departure for a series known for its laser-like focus on fast cars and tight driving mechanics. For the first time in Need for Speed history, you're not a nameless, faceless driver; You play as an actual person named Jack. And Jack is facing tough times. "He's a marked man," explained Product Manager Darin Perfonic in a hands-on showcase last week. "He's got serious problems with some guys who want him dead."
Those "guys" are actually wiseguys — the Mafia. And Jack's last, best hope for survival lies in entering The Run, a sprawling 3,000-mile cross-country race from San Francisco to New York City. With a cool $ 25 million for a first-place finish, The Run represents Jack's last chance for salvation before the goodfellas find him and settle Jack's debts — permanently. "Imagine a Michael Bay summer action-driving movie and that you get to play it," Perfonic elaborated. "That's our vision. We want to create a playable summer blockbuster."
Sitting behind the wheel of The Run, I was struck by the game's gleaming graphical fidelity and huge draw distances. The graphics are based on the Frostbite engine, better known as the rendering technology that powers the Battlefield series. "Frostbite allows us to iterate really quickly and to create a lot of environment depth," Perfonic noted. "It's also allowing us to make the biggest Need for Speed game ever — more than 300 kilometers of track."
The cross-country theme and new tech also lends The Run some welcome visual variety, with tracks ranging from the heavily populated downtown urban settings of San Francisco and Chicago to the lush valleys of Yosemite, the imposing mountains of Colorado, and the sprawling plains of the Midwest. You won't only be battling fellow racers and the mob, but also the elements. In The Run, environmental hazards such as dust storms and blizzards are just as dangerous as an aggressive competitor.
With The Run's emphasis on cross-country pack racing, you'll begin the game dead last in the race and slowly work your way through the pack as you approach the final showdown in New York City. Each state in the game tasks you with passing a certain milestone. "If you don't make the cut, you're out of The Run," Perfonic added ominously. "It's a new element we haven't had in the series before, and it pushes you forward in the game." When you win races and completing challenges, you'll earn XP that you can use to access new cars, new challenges and other rewards.
The Run includes another first for the venerable Need for Speed series: the ability to leave your car. "You can't get out of the car whenever you want," Perfonic clarified, "but the narrative will force you into certain situations and you'll have to advance the story." The out-of-car sequences help provide some context for why you're switching cars mid-race — especially once the mob catches up with you in Chicago. "You'll drive multiple cars. The fiction drives what vehicle you'll commandeer," Perfonic explained.
My play session was set early in the game on the outskirts of Las Vegas, a dusty desert track riddled with dirt-road shortcuts. Based on my hands-on experience, the racing physics felt like a hybrid of NFS: Hot Pursuit and NFS: Shift, with the arcadey accessibility of the former and the weightier vehicles of the latter.
After my hands-on time was over, I was left with many, many more questions. Will the racing extend from cars to other vehicles such as motorcycles? "You'll have to wait and see!" Perfonic teased. Perfonic did confirm that multiplayer will be a major focus and that the social-media-infused Autolog feature will make a return from NFS: Hot Pursuit.

DC Universe Online at Comic-Con: “Fight for the Light” DLC Revealed
Greetings from San Diego Comic-Con! Here on the show floor we're happy to be showing DC Universe Online's first expansion pack – Fight for the Light. Light powers have been a huge fan request since before launch, and we've created an entirely new power set from the ground up with new abilities that deliver on the power fantasy of wielding light constructs in combat. We've put way over-the-top weapons that you could only imagine right into your hands! We've worked hard to build on the existing gameplay mechanics that players love, and to apply them in unique ways that give the new powers a look and feel all their own.
Exercising your creativity and bringing your imagination to the fight is a huge part of being a Lantern, and we wanted to bring that feeling to our players. With light, players will now be able to combine weapon-based combos and superpower abilities in way that just feels right for a Lantern. You can create things like hard-light boxing gloves and use them as a new "on the fly" weapon that comes complete with its own combos. Not only that, these combos can also link to other abilities and hard-light weapons. This allows players to create their own unique sequences of attacks as well as react to the changing face of the battle. These abilities don't even have to be loaded out to be combo'd into! Open with a huge light whip to stun your enemy, call in the boxing gloves to work them over at close range, and then finish them off with the rumbling charge of a locomotive to mow them down. This is the stuff that Lantern lore is made of, and so far at Comic-Con, the smiles have said it all. There's nothing quite like rolling in an Apache Gunship from your full super charge to make a Green Lantern fan happy, and I can tell you after three days of not-stop use it still brings a smile to my face.
In addition to the new Light Power set, players will also be able to experience all-new adventures that take them from Coast City to the Sciencells on Oa. Deep inside S.T.A.R Labs, players will gain more insight into the disturbance with the Power Rings. With light powers, players can create a new character where they receive their Lantern Corps reservist ring and begin to unlock its set of pre-programmed constructs, or to re-spec an existing character to experience the new controller class. With the depth of the combo linking, we feel like most players will want to explore this deep new power set from the beginning, but we wanted to give the players the option of jumping into the deep end straight away with the new content. We've seen fans light up when we tell them they'll be meeting long-requested characters like Vice and Atrocitus from the Red Lanterns, see Lyssa Drak reading from the Book of Parallax, or hear the wise cracks of Guy Gardner as they fight back to back.
