PlayStation Fans: Watch E3 Online Right Here

Last year, we invited three hundred fans into our press conference. This year, we’re shooting for a million.

You’ve been requesting it, so for the first time, we'll be broadcasting the entirety of the PlayStation press conference directly into this Blog. Additionally, we're setting up a mini-studio in the PlayStation booth, and we'll be bringing in developers while the show floor is open for interviews, live demos and to answer your questions via a built-in chat module. It all starts right here on June 6th.

Kaz Hirai, Chairman and Group Chief Executive Officer of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc.

UPDATE: We’ve got several hundred more entries than we’ve got spots open, so we’re cutting off the entries now. We’ll grade the papers over the next few days and contact winners by email. Thanks for entering!

Since this is an LA event, we'd still like to do something for some of our Southern California fans. Because our press conference is already at capacity, we unfortunately won't be able to get anyone into building (again, everyone can watch the livestream right here). However, we were able to secure over one hundred 3-day passes to the E3 Expo, where attendees can visit our booth and go hands-on with NGP and our stellar PS3 lineup as a guest of PlayStation.

We want to make sure only the biggest local PlayStation fans get in, so instead of having folks queue up in the unpredictable Spring weather (as has been the case in past years), we've created a web quiz you can take from the comfort of [wherever you are sitting].

Here are a few things to note:

  • E3 takes place from June 7-9th at the Los Angeles Convention Center, so you'll obviously need to be in SoCal during that time to attend. Don't bother taking the quiz if you won't be there!
  • You must be 18 or older to attend E3 – that's their rule! Your ID will be checked when you go to pick up your badge, so if you're under 18… don't bother taking the quiz!
  • E3 badges are non-transferable, so if you're not sure if you're going to be able to attend… don't bother taking the quiz!
  • The information we're asking for (name & email address only) is required for all attendees by the ESA, who run the E3 Expo. We won't ask for any additional info!
  • We'll grade quizzes and select winners by late next week, and contact winners via email with information on how to pick up your passes.

Good luck!

GT Academy: Silverstone, Here We Come!

GT Academy logo

The time has come! We are now a little more than a week away from crowning the first winner of GT Academy here in the US. This weekend, the nation's top 16 Gran Turismo 5 players will be making their way across the ocean to participate in the final phase of GT Academy, an intense week-long racing camp to be held at the Silverstone Circuit in the U.K. Participants will be judged by an expert panel of racing veterans, judging each competitor's performance behind the wheel of real Nissan race cars, as well as through other grueling challenges designed to push their physical and mental stamina to the limits. The person who is judged to have the most natural talent and potential to succeed as a professional race car driver will be crowned the first GT Academy champion in the US.

Watch a recap of what went down in March at the National Finals event, where the nation's top 32 GT5 players, who made it through a field of over 53,000 entrants, faced off to determine which 16 would make the trip to Silverstone to compete in real cars for a shot at being GT Academy champion.

The GT Academy champion will go on to train with elite race coaches and drivers before competing as part of a professional racing team. If the champion truly has what it takes, he will go on to take part in major international races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, just like the first European GT Academy winner, Lucas Ordonez, who will race at Le Mans in a few weeks. In just three short years, Lucas has gone from grad student to making his first appearance on Le Mans… and the US GT Academy champion could be joining him there in a few years!

Congratulations from Sony, Polyphony Digital and Nissan North America to these truly amazing 16 individuals. We wish them all good luck.

The top 16, in no particular order:

Bryan Heitkotter, Christopher Roberts, Jason Miller, Andre Gomes, John Wilding, Christopher Morton, Kris Norris, Gregory Russell, Connor Clifford, Phillip Arscott, Nick Fontana, Rich Pratt, Glenn McGee Howle, Steve Driscoll, Sean Johnston, Jose Cedeno

Join us on Facebook to stay up to date with the latest news and happenings direct from Silverstone next week, and watch for the GT Academy reality show to debut on the Speed Channel this fall.

God of War III: How to Make a Monster

Call me late to the party, but I've been flipping through Ballistic Publishing‘s 272-page opus The Art of God of War III — and I like it. It reads like a cookbook for wannabe creature creators, chronicling God of War III's evolving monster designs throughout the game's extensive development process. The luscious artwork is accompanied by insightful commentary and anecdotes from the game's visual development artists and the phenoms at Sony Santa Monica Studios.

In addition to pages and pages of unseen concept art and reference sketches, The Art of God of War III showcases characters and creatures that didn't make it into the final version of the game, including several monster designs that were (sadly) left on the cutting-room floor.

Which creature design is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!

Chimera by Andy Park

Art by Andy Park

Chimera

"This is a creature I initially designed way back during the previous game, God of War II.… I designed the Chimera thinking of the three personalities of the creature: lion, goat, and snake. They are one being, but they have three different brains and therefore, three different personalities. This illustration showcases the creature in all its vicious glory; with three heads vying to be the one that gets to kill the infamous Kratos. It's a battle against Kratos and its inner self." — Andy Park, Visual Development Artist, God of War III

Argus by IzzyArgus by Izzy

Argus sketches by Izzy

Art by Izzy Medrano

Argus

"Definitely the tragedy of the game for the character department….After lots of sketches, including a pretty bad-ass multi-limbed elephant, the final design was a monstrosity covered with eyes meant to look like a very uncomfortable viral outbreak. It was this freakish frog-type thing with no mouth. I imagined that it would make an awful deep rumbling when out of camera, and all you would hear aside from that was the buzz of blood-bloated flies that follow it everywhere it went. I gave him the name Argus to tie in with the hundred-eyed shepherd from the old myths, and it stuck.

After he was modeled and built, he got scrapped because it was felt that he was too alien-looking. So I went back to the drawing board and came up with a hulking monster with one huge arm that also had tons of eyes all over his body in a herpes-like pattern. We even got the tech working so that all the eyes would follow Kratos, but he was scrapped again due to time constraints." — Izzy Medrano, Visual Development Artist

Hades by Andrew KimHades by Cecil Kim

Art by Andrew Kim and Cecil Kim

Hades

"The God of the Underworld needed to be a big imposing guy….There were a lot of discussions regarding what would be revealed when Hades' helmet was finally pulled off in the game….Here, we experimented as if Hades took the souls into his own body and used them as some kind of weapon. The original concept called for these horrifying tentacles — each with their own head — almost as if Hades had all these demons within him trying to escape. In the end, this design felt out of place and we gave Hades a simpler, but still terrifying, skeletal burn-victim-like face." — Andrew Kim, Visual Development Artist, God of War III

Centaur by Andy ParkCentaur (female) by Andy Park

Art by Andy Park

Centaur General and Female Centaur

"I wanted to create a look that was a departure from the original Centaur in the first God of War. I designed a more intelligent, and more imposing, Centaur that would act as a general in the Olympian army…He ended up feeling raw, brutal, and very intimidating.

I also got to design a female version of the Centaur that was unfortunately not used in the game. This time I gave the horse part of the creature white fur and tried to have a more slender feel to it while still maintaining a bulk necessary to keep it intimidating. These were really fun to design." — Andy Park, Visual Development Artist, God of War III

Satyr by AndyParkSatyr by AndyPark

Satyr sketches by AndyPark

Art by Andy Park

Satyr

"The Satyr is half-man and half-goat. I did a bunch of variations on what this character could look like, but I also kept in mind that this creature needed to be very agile, and even acrobatic…In the end, I gave the Satyr a more man-like, creature-esque face, and gave the armor a more goat-like feel. I saw it as the Satyr hiding his true visage with him denying his more human side." — Andy Park, Visual Development Artist, God of War III

Cerberus by Izzy

Cerberus sketch by IzzyCerberus sketch by Izzy

Art by Izzy Medrano

Cerberus

"The Cerberus was a really exciting project. I eventually came up with this really awesome burnt and tortured beast that was pregnant with little magma fireballs that would launch out of the central blind head's throat. I wanted them to feel like they were so violent and aggressive because of they constant pain they were in, hence the chains woven through and underneath their skin and the awful burn scarring. In the end, this version got scrapped in favor of a concept from the very first game. I was really sad to see her go." — Izzy Medrano, Visual Development Artist

Poseidon by AndyPark

Art by Andy Park

Poseidon Tentacles

"This is the design of the tentacles that protrude out of the main body of the Poseidon creature. It's an amalgamation of the Hippocampus, crustacean parts, and water. In its open state, I designed the crab-like legs protruding from its back to mimic the shape of Poseidon's Trident. In its closed state, it acts simply as a crazy claw-like creature that then opens up to reveal the sea horse within." — Andy Park, Visual Development Artist

UNCHARTED 3: A Peek Behind the Digital Curtain

The blockbuster success of James Cameron's Avatar proved what many gamers and game developers already knew: Motion capture is the future of performance. The film's groundbreaking use of mocap technology caught the attention of Hollywood and the game industry, raising interest in perfecting the nascent craft with a combination of new technology, refined processes, and good old-fashioned acting chops.

"We've developed a unique process for motion capture and performance capture for games," UNCHARTED 3 Creative Director Amy Hennig explained during a recent tour of Naughty Dog's cutting-edge new mocap studio in Culver City, California. "We're kind of ahead of the pack." Hennig described the evolution of the UNCHARTED series' motion capture technology, beginning with the humble stage used to record UNCHARTED: Drake's Fortune. It was an outdated, uncomfortable place to perform, equipped with a camera array that painted the room with eye-searing red light. And its poor acoustics made dialog recording impossible, so in-game speech had to be added later.

UNCHARTED 3: Drake's Deception - Motion Capture Scene

"We cast very carefully, that's step one in any project. If you cast hastily or badly, you're screwed forever. If you cast well, you can write any piece of crap and they'll make it sound wonderful. Trust me, I've done it!"
— Amy Hennig, Creative Director, UNCHARTED 3: Drake's Deception

Following UNCHARTED's breakout success, Naughty Dog upgraded to the vastly more sophisticated facilities at the House of Moves for UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves, a game that further strained the boundaries of cinematic game storytelling. The House of Moves facilities featured an integrated sound stage that enabled Naughty Dog's team to record dialog while simultaneously capturing the actor's physical performances — a then-unheard of process that is quickly becoming the gold standard for video-game performances.

UNCHARTED 3: Drake's Deception - Motion Capture SceneUNCHARTED 3: Drake's Deception - Motion Capture Scene

An array of 86 infra-red cameras capture the actors’ physical performances with eerie precision. The studio's integrated soundstage lets the actors deliver their lines seamlessly along with their movements.

Now, with UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception, the team is shooting on its very own cutting-edge mocap set, the culmination of years of pioneering experimentation in game storytelling. Though the sets and props are largely virtual, Hennig and her team make frequent comparisons to shooting for television. "We don't have the luxury of writing a big script in an ivory tower," she explained. "We have an outline that we work from and we write the scenes as we go." That looser approach gives Hennig and her storytelling team the flexibility to adapt to script changes or make tweaks based on a performer's strengths. "As the writer, I get to learn the actor's voices — their cadences, their idiosyncrasies, and I write them right in," Hennig said. "Their characters become infused with their personalities."

UNCHARTED 3: Drake's Deception - Motion Capture Scene

UNCHARTED 3's high-tech motion capture process converts the actor's movements into 3D datam which displays in real time over a simple approximation of the game environment. Later, animators and artists adjust the mocap data and drop it into the final game.

Actor Nolan North — who performs as series frontman Nathan Drake but also boasts an impressive resume of film, TV, animation and game performance work — raved about working with Hennig's team on the UNCHARTED series. "I find that movie stars aren't that interested in doing games, but actors are. There is a freedom and a beauty of doing this that's like going back to the roots of black-box theater. It's collaborative; it's the true actor experience." North also pointed out a rapid shift in the perception of video game performances among actors. "It's changed. I know people who used to do video games and told me, 'oh, eventually you'll move on to animation.' And now they're trying to get back into games!"

UNCHARTED 3: Drake's Deception - Motion Capture Scene

"This might surprise some people, but we don't just play Drake and Sully. Sometimes I'm mocapping the guy whose neck I'm breaking! Sometimes we play as the bad guys…in UNCHARTED 2's train sequence, you'll notice that one soldier runs with a bit of a limp. That's me, chasing me, and getting blown up by propane tanks."
— Nolan North (as Nathan Drake)

UNCHARTED 3: Drake's Deception - Motion Capture SceneUNCHARTED 3: Drake's Deception - Motion Capture Scene

This humble array of sandbags and carpentry will be transformed into a realistic vehicle in the digital world of UNCHARTED 3. (Right) Naughty Dog pioneered the process of capturing motion and dialog simultaneously for video game performances, eliminating the disjointed feel found in some other game performances.

UNCHARTED 3: Drake's Deception - Motion Capture Scene

"Amy writes a great script. It's like a strong tree, and we just branch from it," Nolan North says. "If you let actors go too much with ad-libbing, when you don't have a strong story structure, it becomes a mess. We do our thing, and then Naughty Dog takes it and makes magic."
